Artist Statement

Ben Mickelson’s work explores landscape as it is encountered through movement rather than observation. His mixed-media compositions draw from his time spent traveling through mountainous terrain on skis, on foot, and by bike, where elevation, weather, and distance continually alter perception.

Built through layered materials and subtle shifts in tone, the work reflects how place is absorbed over time. Forms repeat and dissolve, suggesting familiar terrain without fixing it to a single viewpoint. The resulting landscapes are not records of specific locations, but accumulations of movement, memory, and atmosphere.
